International Women of Courage Awards

​While visiting the United States, Australian Prime Minister Julia Gillard was an honored guest at the US State Department’s International Women of Courage Award ceremony.

“Can I say it is absolutely fantastic to be here on International Women’s Day?”

​The International Women of Courage Awards recognizes courageous women from around the world who lead the way in championing empowerment and rights for women, despite facing oppression.

​Among the award-winners to receive honors were lawyers, journalists, Internet bloggers, political and human rights activists, and Kyrgyzstan President Roza Otumbayeva.

​The International Women of Courage Awards have been held since 2007, and has honored 38 women from 27 countries.
