France's Eiffel Tower, New York's Empire State Building, Japan's Hiroshima Peace Memorial and England's Buckingham Palace and Tower Bridge were among the sites that turned off their lights for a hour.
Individual households also participated in the event. Organizers estimate hundreds of millions of people in 150 countries turned off their lights to show their support for the planet.
Earth Hour has seen a yearly increase in participation since it began in Sydney, Australia, in 2007.
