FOREIGN COMPANIES WITHDRAWING FROM BOEUNG KAK PROJECT

FOREIGN COMPANIES WITHDRAWING FROM BOEUNG KAK PROJECT

This is important news related to the controversial Boeng Kak
investment project that has led to land grabbing and forced and
violent evictions affecting thousands of poor families in Phnom Penh.

Following numerous and increasingly serious incidents between the
concerned Shukaku company and the Phnom Penh Municipality authorities
on the one hand, and the local population on the other hand, foreign
companies associated with, and providing funds to, Shukaku, decided to
withdraw from the controversial business association and project,
therefore inevitably stalling and jeopardizing the project in the near
future.

On September 19, 2011 the Sam Rainsy Party declared the Shukaku
company “enemy of the Khmer people” (please read the statement in
English below or in Khmer at http://tinyurl.com/3t8ravf).

We congratulate all those foreign companies for their wise decision to
suspend their association with an enemy of the Khmer people.

For more details on this issue, please listen to Sam Rainsy’s
interview with Candle Light Radio in Phnom Penh on October 1, 2011 at

SHUKAKU INC. DECLARED “ENEMY OF THE KHMER PEOPLE”

On behalf of the justice-loving Cambodian people and in defense of
countless victims of abuses and injustices in this country, the Sam
Rainsy Party (SRP), Cambodia’s second largest political party,
declares SHUKAKU Inc. “enemy of the Khmer people” for its senseless
Boeung Kak Lake investment project in the capital city of Phnom Penh
that has caused unspeakable sufferings to thousands of poor people
over the last few years.

On September 11, 2011 the SRP Fifth Convention adopted the following
resolution (point # 2):
« Approve and publicize the watchword of the SRP: "Give back to the
Khmer people any assets stolen from them ".
The future government led by the SRP will cancel all land, forest and
mining concessions granted by the present government that were
associated with land grabbing and eviction of the legitimate owners of
the land.
Our nation’s assets will be given back to our nation.

Rice fields and other farmland, forests and mountains, rivers and
lakes, fishing zones, seashores and islands will be returned to their
legitimate owners, meaning the Khmer people, or will be used to serve
the public interest and the needs of the entire population, especially
the poorest segment of the population.
Any individual or private company that forcibly seizes land or living
areas belonging to the local population and deprives them of their
livelihood is considered as “enemy of the Khmer people” and will be
punished accordingly.
The people are the only owners and masters of the land. »

Therefore the SRP warns all legitimate companies and organizations
worldwide not to associate themselves in any way with  SHUKAKU  Inc.,
meaning, inter alias, not to detain any stake in its capital, not to
get involved in any joint venture with it, not to lend it any money,
not to give it any guarantee, not to buy any good, service or product
from it, not to sell any good, service or product to it, not to
cooperate with it in any way, and, in short, not to be perceived as
accomplices of this enemy of the Khmer people that will be treated as
such when Cambodia becomes a democratic, independent and sovereign
state.

SHUKAKU Inc. is owned and managed by Mr. Lao Meng Khin, a Senator from
the ruling Cambodian People’s Party (CPP) and a ruthless and
unscrupulous business tycoon. Details of the ongoing Boeung Kak Lake
project can be found at http://tinyurl.com/6d7wvw2
