Poll: Parents face tuition burden

About half of the parents surveyed in Bangkok said the cost associated with the reopening of schools is causing them financial problems, Bangkok Poll reported on Monday.
Bangkok Poll surveyed people about the cost of living during the opening of schools, involving 1,083 parents in Bangkok and neighbouring provinces.

The result was about evenly split, with 50.8 per cent of the respondents saying they had no problems paying for their children's tuition fees.
The remaining 49.2 per cent said they could not afford to pay for the tuition fees --  40.0 per cent of them said it was because of higher school expenses, 26.3 per cent said it was due to lower household income and 16.6 per cent cited more expensive tuition fees.
19.8 per cent of those with financial difficulties said they had to use their long-term savings. 19.1 per cent said they had to borrow money from their relatives and friends. 18.5 per cent said they told their children to use old school supplies.
The pollster said 56.1 per cent said their children's allowances will stay the same. 43.2 per cent said they will pay a higher allowance and 0.7 per cent said they will pay less.
As for the government's policy to provide school students with tablet computers, 31.9 per cent said the tablets would be very useful for their children's education. 21.9 per cent said the tablets would be useful, 23.3 per cent said they would help their children to some extent, and 22.9 per cent said their children would gain nothing from them.

And 21.6 per cent said they wanted schools to focus more on education than extracurricular activities, 14.2 per cent wanted teachers to be more attentive and ethical, while other 9.0 per cent wanted the government to increase the budget for school supplies.
