Ivory Coast's former president Laurent Gbagbo waits for the judges to arrive for his initial
court appearance at the International Criminal Court in The Hague, December 5, 2011.
The International Criminal Court is due to open a hearing
Tuesday to decide if the case against former Ivory Coast president Laurent
Gbagbo will go to trial.
Gbagbo faces four counts of crimes against humanity for his alleged role in the
violence that followed his defeat in the country's 2010 presidential election.
His arrest marked an end to months of fighting that killed 3,000 people and
displaced more than one million as he struggled to hold on to leadership of the
country.
Gbagbo has been in ICC custody since November 2011, and the court has twice
delayed the hearing into whether there is enough evidence for him to stand
trial.
The ICC has also indicted his wife, Simone Gbagbo, for crimes against humanity.
