The death toll from the
collapse of building that housed several garment factories in Bangladesh has
jumped to 175 as emergency workers continue to search for survivors. About
1,000 people were injured in the accident
Workers trapped in the wreckage have been awaiting rescue
since Wednesday when the building in Savar, in the suburbs of Dhaka, imploaded.
Survivors say the collapse happened within minutes.
Families have gathered at a school near the collapsed
building were bodies are being taken.
Authorities say charges have been filed against the owner of
the building and charges are also expected to be filed against the factory
owners.
In November, a fire at a garment factory killed more than 100
workers, raising an outcry about the nation's garment industry.
Bangladesh has the second largest garment industry in the
world, proving cheap clothes for major Western brands and retailers which
benefit the the South Asian nation's abundant low-cost labor.
