'Jackal' Loses Appeal in French Bombings

The man once known as Carlos the Jackal, one of the world's most wanted criminals, has lost an appeal of his conviction in a string of bombings in France three decades ago that killed 11 people and wounded about 150 others.

The 63-year-old Venezuelan defendant, whose real name is Ilich Ramirez Sanchez, had appealed his 2011 conviction for masterminding four separate bombings during the 1980s involving trains, a train station and a Paris street.

Prosecutors said the bombings were Ramirez's retaliation for the arrest of two of his gang members. Ramirez had denied involvement in all of the attacks.

The one-time Marxist militant has been jailed in France since 1994, when French agents forcibly removed him from hiding in Sudan. He is already serving a separate life sentence for a triple murder in Paris in 1975.
