PHNOM PENH (Cambodia Herald) - Soprano singer Bosbapanh is appealing to fans and other supporters to help her family raise another $20,000 so she can study in the United States for five years.

In addition to a $50,000 scholarship, the singer has already received $30,000 from the private sector.

"I really want my fans to help me so that I can complete my studies and come back to Cambodia to show my talent," she said. "I can challenge other people as music and art are in my blood."

During her studies at Walnut Hill School for the Arts in Massachusetts, Bosbapanh hopes to study piano, art history, composition and international singing.

No other Asian opera singer has had the chance to study at the school. "I love opera as it is hard to sing and I have to focus while singing," she said. "Everyone can compete but there is only one winner."

Opera teacher Khoun Sithy Sak, who has spent the past year teaching Bosbapanh, said she was a quick learner, picking up in one year what others would take 10 years to master.

"I am happy and proud to have her as my student," he said. "I feel sad as we Khmers have poor knowledge of opera.

"However, I believe Khmers will value opera some day because everyone in the world likes opera. It would help us to attract more tourists as well."
