Local firefighters were battling a fire burning at the plant, located in a small community located just outside the town of Waco, when the blast occurred. An official with the Texas Department of Public Safety says between 50-75 houses near the plant were destroyed, and that many residents were injured.
The official says the blast caused included fatalities, but would not give an exact number. Media reports say at least two people have been killed.
Many residents of the community were evacuated, including a nursing home with over 100 residents.
A nearby high school football field was turned into emergency staging area to treat the victims.
Texas Governor Rick Perry has issued a statement saying state resources have been mobilized to provide assistance to local authorities.
