Japan Drops Water on Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant

In an attempt to regain control over a deepening nuclear crisis, military helicopters dropped water on overheating reactors at the Daiichi nuclear plant

High radiation levels on Wednesday prevented the drop aimed at cooling fuel rods at reactor number 3.

On Thursday, two out of the four water drops over the site appeared to hit their mark.

The plant operator described reactor number 3, which uses plutonium in its fuel mix, as the "priority," Japan's cabinet secretary said.

[Yukio Edano, Japanese Chief Cabinet Secretary]:

"We are aiming to escape the current situation as fast as possible and at the same time, even though a large part of Japan has been affected, the non-affected parts are still very productive. Thus it is imperative that we show the global markets our solidarity in the face of this disaster and our willingness to overcome the current situation."

Water was also being poured into reactors 5 and 6, indicating the entire six-reactor facility was at risk of overheating.
