Cassava buyer killed in Kampong Cham theft

A Vietnamese woman who crossed into Cambodia intending to buy a stock of cassava was killed yesterday morning in Kampong Cham’s Dar commune in what police say was a a robbery.

Her motorbike and more than 30 million riel (about $7,500) were taken.

Chan Ha, deputy chief of the police’s central justice office in Kampong Cham, identified the woman as Vang Thylang, 42, from Vietnam’s Tay Ninh province.

“Suspects shot her with four bullets and robbed a bag of her money and the motorbike.

The victim was shot on her left leg, eyebrow and body, and died at the scene,” he said.

Memot district police chief Em Kosal said the suspects might have followed the woman from the border after noticing her exchanging money on previous runs.

“We are co-operating with Vietnamese authorities to search for accomplices,” Kosal said.
