Philippine Landslide Kills Three

Rescue efforts continue after a landslide killed three on the southern Philippine island of Mindanao.

Dozens are still missing.

Volunteers and authorities work tirelessly to find survivors in Kingking village, where the landslide hit before dawn on Thursday.

Most of the victims were miners living underneath tunnels built by the St Augustine Mining Company.

Lucky miners who were rescued relive the harrowing experience of being buried alive.

[Rico Clase, Rescued Miner]:

"When the landslide happened at 3 a.m. we were buried. I tried hard to crawl and managed to get free. The rest who were sleeping were entombed."

The area is remote. There are no proper roads, and there is no landing zone for helicopters. All these make rescue efforts almost impossible.

[Celso Sarenas, Mayor]:

"We can't recover the bodies if we don't use heavy equipment. That is our biggest problem. There were others trapped under the tunnel, and we could hear voices, which is why we're rushing to get to them."

Kingking village is believed to have one of the world's largest deposits of copper and gold.

A gold rush 20 years ago attracted thousands of impoverished Filipinos, who then turned this mountainside into a shantytown.
