A man and a three-year-old boy drowned in Banteay Meanchey province on Sunday, as floodwaters from storms in neighbouring Thailand continued to ravage the province.
The body of three-year-old Ly Sophal of Sisophon district’s Teuk Thla commune was found in a pond, Banteay Meanchey Deputy Governor Om Metrey said. Both Sambau, 50, of the same district, drowned in a strong flood current.
“We regret to hear of the two deaths from the flood,” Metrey said. “We have warned residents to be careful, especially with children.”
Families of the two victims will receive 50 kilograms of rice and 300,000 riel ($75) from the provincial government, Metrey said.
During a visit to Banteay Meanchey yesterday, Nhim Vanda, vice president of the National Committee for Disaster Management, suggested provincial officials erect four temporary bridges to enable vehicle travel.

More than 500 families remain unable to return to their homes in the province, where almost two weeks of flooding has left some areas submerged under chest-deep water levels.
East of Banteay Meanchey, Preah Vihear Provincial Governor Om Mara told residents they should begin preparing to evacuate their homes amid heavy flooding.
More than 220 houses have been damaged, and about 40 hectares of farmland ruined in the deluge, Preah Vihear provincial police chief Kam Seim said.
“Authorities are ready to evacuate residents,” Seim said. “We ask them to be careful when leaving their homes.”
