UNPO Presidency Expresses Solidarity with
The Hague, 28 February 2011
The Presidency of the Unrepresented Nations and Peoples Organization (UNPO), further to the ongoing protests in the Middle East and North Africa,
- join together in publicly supporting the nonviolent protests as a means of bringing peaceful political and social change to Tunisia, Egypt, Yemen, Bahrain, Algeria, Morocco and Libya;
- applaud the successes of the nonviolent protests in the Middle East and North Africa and convey to their leaders and supporters the importance of their success for sustaining and furthering nonviolent campaigns around the world;
- condemn the brutality with which peaceful protestors have been intimidated, physically harassed, injured, and killed by state security forces and their proxies acting on the orders of undemocratic and unaccountable leaders;
- express their condolences to the families of those that have been killed as a result of their nonviolent actions by state security forces and have subsequently joined the thousands who have given their lives over the decades in the name of nonviolence;
- reiterate the belief, borne out by recent events, that nonviolence is an ethos that transcends race, creed, or colour that requires greater material support and deeper understanding from today’s policy-makers and statesmen;
- welcome the inspiration that individuals many thousands of miles from the Middle East and North Africa have taken from the protests, and support their nonviolent campaigns for the rights and justice which they believe their leaders owe to them;
- call upon the international community to live up to their public statements and ensure that the nonviolent protests that have brought so much change, so quickly, to so many people, be supported in this, their time of greatest test.
The UNPO Presidency makes this declaration as a body representing over fifty organisations that have each pledged to find nonviolent solutions to the problems that affect them and which over the course of twenty years has seen the UNPO engaged in a nonviolent campaign for the rights and respect of millions of people on five continents.
